PTE Core Exam Overview
The PTE Core is a computer-based English proficiency test designed for immigration and work purposes, rather than academic admissions. It evaluates practical English skills through Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing tasks, with an AI-driven scoring system ensuring fairness and accuracy. The test takes about 2 hours and consists of 49 to 54 tasks across 19 different question types.
Test Format
Speaking & Writing (Integrated)
This section assesses pronunciation, fluency, and coherence in writing. The key tasks include:
- Read Aloud: Read a short passage (up to 60 words) aloud.
- Repeat Sentence: Listen and repeat a sentence (3-9 seconds long).
- Describe Image: Explain key details of an image within 40 seconds.
- Respond to a Situation: Answer questions based on a given scenario.
- Answer Short Question: Provide a one-word or short-phrase answer.
- Summarize Written Text: Read a passage (up to 200 words) and summarize it in 25-50 words.
- Write Email: Write an email response of 80-120 words.
Reading
This section evaluates comprehension and grammar skills through five question types:
- Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks: Select words to complete a 200-word text.
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer: Choose multiple correct answers after reading a 275-word passage.
- Reorder Paragraph: Arrange jumbled sentences in the correct order.
- Fill in the Blanks: Drag and drop words into a text with missing words.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Choose the best response for a question on a short passage.
Listening
The listening section consists of seven tasks based on audio or video clips, played only once:
- Summarize Spoken Text: Write a summary (20-30 words) of an audio clip (45-75 seconds).
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer: Choose correct answers after listening to a recording.
- Fill in the Blanks: Complete a transcript based on an audio clip.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Pick the best summary of an audio clip (30-60 seconds).
- Select Missing Word: Choose the correct word(s) to complete an audio clip (20-70 seconds).
- Highlight Incorrect Words: Identify words that differ from the transcript while listening.
- Write from Dictation: Listen to short sentences (3-5 seconds each) and type them accurately.
Scoring & Results
- Scores range from 10 to 90 based on AI evaluation.
- Results are typically available within 48 hours.
- The PTE Core score aligns with Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, which are essential for Canadian immigration applications.
