Parts of Speech
There are 8 parts of speech in English grammar.
1. Noun
Definition: Names a person, place, thing, or idea.
Types:
• Proper Noun: Specific names (e.g., Akash, India).
• Common Noun: General names (e.g., teacher, country).
• Abstract Noun: Ideas/feelings (e.g., love, bravery).
• Concrete Noun: Tangible things (e.g., book, apple).
• Countable Noun: Can be counted (e.g., chairs, pens).
• Uncountable Noun: Cannot be counted (e.g., water, sugar).
• Collective Noun: A group (e.g., team, flock).
2. Pronoun
Definition: Replaces a noun.
Types:
• Personal Pronoun: I, you, he, she.
• Possessive Pronoun: Mine, yours, ours.
• Reflexive Pronoun: Myself, herself.
• Relative Pronoun: Who, which, that.
• Demonstrative Pronoun: This, that, these, those.
• Indefinite Pronoun: Someone, anyone.
3. Adjective
Definition: Describes or modifies a noun/pronoun.
Types:
• Descriptive Adjective: Beautiful, tall.
• Quantitative Adjective: Some, many.
• Demonstrative Adjective: This, those.
• Possessive Adjective: My, their.
• Interrogative Adjective: Which, what.
• Comparative Adjective: Bigger, smarter.
• Superlative Adjective: Biggest, smartest.
4. Verb
Definition: Shows action or state of being.
Types:
• Action Verb: Run, write.
• Linking Verb: Is, seem.
• Helping Verb: Will, have.
• Transitive Verb: Needs an object (e.g., I eat food).
• Intransitive Verb: No object (e.g., I sleep).
5. Adverb
Definition: Describes verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
Types:
• Manner: Quickly, happily.
• Place: Here, everywhere.
• Time: Now, tomorrow.
• Frequency: Always, often.
• Degree: Very, too.
6. Conjunction
Definition: Connects words, phrases, or clauses.
Types:
• Coordinating Conjunctions: For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (FANBOYS).
• Subordinating Conjunctions: Because, although.
• Correlative Conjunctions: Either…or, neither…nor.
7. Interjection
Definition: Expresses strong emotions.
Examples: Wow! Oh! Hurray! Alas!
8. Preposition
Definition: Shows the relationship between a noun/pronoun and another word.
Examples: In, on, at, under, over.
